Gibson’s acoustic range includes instruments with visibly different body shapes and construction. This guide looks at the Elvis SJ-200, Hummingbird Original and J-45 Standard named in the original 2023 article, while keeping their specifications separate.

Elvis SJ-200
Gibson’s Elvis SJ-200 in Ebony has a Sitka spruce top with maple back, sides and neck. The original article incorrectly called the back and sides rosewood. Its large SJ-200 body and decorative appointments give it a different physical starting point from the two dreadnought designs below.
Hummingbird Original
The Hummingbird Original uses a square-shoulder dreadnought body. The manufacturer reference pairs a Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides. Finish, electronics and appointments should still be checked on the exact model year and edition.
J-45 Standard
The J-45 Standard is a round-shoulder dreadnought with a Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides. A shared spruce/mahogany combination does not make its body shape, feel or response identical to a Hummingbird.
Make the comparison in person
Try the guitars at the same comfortable playing level, seated and standing if possible. Compare reach, neck feel, balance and the response to your own picking or strumming. The names and artist associations offer context, but they do not establish a universal best choice or the sound you will obtain.
