Boss Katana GO Personal Headphone Guitar Amp (KTNGO)

The Boss Katana GO plugs straight into your guitar or bass and puts a full Katana rig in your headphones — no amp, no leads, no interface, nobody else in the house woken up. What ships now is BOSS's current KTNGO2 version: the sounds and the feature set are the same as the one it follows, but the body has been redrawn. Master volume has come off the front face and become a recessed thumb-wheel on the side edge, so the front is now flat — BOSS logo, katana mark, OLED display, nothing standing proud to catch on a strap or a pocket.

Ten characters for guitar, three for bass

Guitar mode carries ten amp characters lifted from the Katana stage amps: cleans, crunch, the high-gain BOSS Brown type, a pair set up for acoustic-electric guitar, and more besides. Bass players get their own mode with the Vintage, Modern and Flat types ported across from the Katana Bass amplifiers. Each mode holds over 60 BOSS effects and 30 memories that arrive loaded and ready to play, and the A, B and C buttons on the edge step through them while the OLED tells you where you are. Nudge the slider next to them and the tuner comes up on the same display.

Stage Feel puts the amp back in the room

Headphones normally pin everything flat between your ears, which is the reason practice through them gets tiring. Stage Feel uses BOSS's spatial processing to push the amp — and whatever you are playing along to — out in front of you instead. The presets cover standing in front of a backline and jamming with friends in a room, and if you want the sound field somewhere else again you can move it yourself in the BOSS Tone Studio app.

Practise, edit and record from your phone

Bluetooth carries both the editing and the music, so you can rebuild a memory from scratch on your phone while streaming the track you are learning. The Session tools in BOSS Tone Studio bring YouTube into it: build a song list, loop the two bars that keep beating you, and drop timestamps so the amp changes memories for you mid-track. BOSS Tone Exchange adds a library of Livesets to pull down, and settings written on a full-size Katana guitar or bass amp import straight in. Run the USB-C into a computer or a phone and it works as an audio interface for your DAW or your social feed, Stage Feel and all. The battery is good for about five hours, the quarter-inch plug folds flat against the body, and the whole amp weighs 65 grams.
