When it comes to making electronic products of any kind, Japanese companies are simply peerless. So don’t let the name fool you…Roland is and always was a Japanese company. Founded in Osaka in 1972, this maker of synthesizers and amplifiers (among other things) has been a respected name in the world of professional music for decades. Back in the early 1960’s, Ikutaro Kakehashi first founded Ace Electronic Industries and later contracted with Hammond to make rhythm machines for their organs. But by the early 1970’s he had distanced himself from both of those companies in order to found Roland. The name was selected out of the phone book as one that would be easy for customers worldwide to pronounce.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with other world-class manufacturers and distributors of instruments and musical equipment, Roland is presently expanding their business to include video and images, focusing primarily on video-editing equipment. Roland Corporation Australia Pty Limited is Australia’s authorized distributor of Roland products, and enjoys a unique position as the first joint venture to be set up outside Japan, in 1976.
Cutting-edge technology mixed with unbridled creativity have made Roland an important name in the world of electronic instruments, which are the company’s main focus. However, along with their synthesizers, electronic drums, and digital stage pianos, and more, Roland also offers music-related computer hardware such as audio and video mixers for web streaming, and USB audio interfaces.
Well-known users include former Boston Pops conductor John Williams, who utilized several Roland JV products with SR-JV80 expansion boards, and the late film composer Jerry Goldsmith who composed five Star Trek movie scores.
