Martin 00-15M 15 Series Mahogany Acoustic Guitar

The Martin 00-15M is the 15 Series at its most honest: a small-bodied, all-mahogany Martin with no binding, no gloss and nothing to hide behind. The 00 body — the size Martin has long called the Grand Concert — sits comfortably against your ribs and rewards a player who works close to the microphone or the sofa rather than the back of a room. Everything Martin normally spends on cosmetics has been left out, and what remains is a genuinely fine guitar for people who play them for a living.

A 00 body, not a dreadnought

Martin lists the shape as 00-14 Fret, joining the neck at the fourteenth fret on the narrower of Martin's two mid-size outlines. It is a compact guitar with a tight waist, which means the note arrives quickly and stops when you tell it to rather than blooming on and swallowing the next one. Fingerpickers and anyone recording at home tend to fall for this size first. Note that its sibling in this batch, the 000-15M StreetMaster, is the larger 000 Auditorium — these two are often confused, and they are not the same guitar.

Solid mahogany, top to back

Top, back and sides are all solid mahogany, finished in Dark Mahogany. A mahogany top behaves differently from spruce: it is drier, more focused in the midrange and less inclined to spread out into overtones, so chords stay legible and single notes keep their edge. Inside, Martin uses a non-scalloped spruce X-brace at 5/16", which keeps the top under control and helps the guitar hold its shape under a firm right hand. The neck goes on with a simple dovetail joint.

Satin, no binding, no apology

The finish is satin throughout and there is no binding anywhere on the instrument — the woods simply meet. This is the deliberate 15 Series look, not a cost-cutting accident, and satin has the practical advantage of showing fingerprints far less than gloss while letting the mahogany move and breathe. The one flourish is on the fingerboard: an abalone Diamonds and Squares short pattern, which is a lovely piece of detail on a guitar this plain.

The neck, and how it plays

Select hardwood neck, Modified Low Oval profile, Standard Taper, with a 25.4" scale length and a 1 11/16" nut width. The fingerboard is East Indian rosewood, 20 frets, measuring 2 1/8" across at the twelfth. That combination is Martin's familiar all-rounder feel — enough shoulder to push against for strumming, shallow enough through the middle of the neck that barre chords and long sets do not wear your hand out. The Standard Taper keeps the string spacing tighter than Martin's wider High-Performance necks, which suits players coming across from electrics.

Bone at both ends

Both the nut and the saddle are bone — a compensated bone saddle on a 16" radius, dropped into a modern belly bridge in East Indian rosewood. Bone transfers string energy into the guitar more efficiently than moulded synthetics and it wears well over years of restringing, so this is a detail worth having at any level. Tuning is handled by Ping nickel open-gear machines with black knobs, in keeping with the rest of the instrument's understated look.

Strings, case and getting it to your door

The 00-15M leaves the factory strung with Martin Authentic Acoustic Lifespan 2.0 Phosphor Bronze in Light gauge, which is the treated set Martin uses when it wants a string to keep its brightness for weeks rather than days. It ships in a Martin softshell case — an actual case, not a gig bag, with internal padding, a waterproof shell and backpack straps, which is exactly what you want for public transport, back seats and the walk from the car park to the venue. Freight anywhere in Australia is straightforward, and it arrives ready to play.

Set up in-store by Guitar World Australia's techs before it ships to you, so it plays perfectly the moment it arrives.
