Solar CHUG CAPO Low Latency Pitch Shifter Pedal

The Solar CHUG CAPO does one job and does it quickly: it shifts your pitch up or down in semitones, the way a capo would, without asking you to retune or reach for a second guitar. It belongs to Ola Englund's CHUG line, and the whole design argument is latency — Solar quote roughly half the delay of comparable single-purpose pitch boxes, which is the difference between a riff that tracks your right hand and one that feels like it is arriving late.

Twelve semitones each way, read straight off the display

Two arrow buttons flank a blue LED readout: the right one lifts pitch a semitone at a time, the left one drops it, and the display tells you where you are anywhere from −12 through +12. The layout is linear, like the fretboard itself, so there is nothing to learn — drop two for a D tuning, lift five to cover a song written in another key, and read the number instead of counting in your head. Solar have voiced the shifting so chords keep their character rather than collapsing into artefacts, which is what makes it usable across whole sections of a song and not just single-note parts.

MIX, FAV and a chassis built for the board

The MIX button balances the shifted signal against your dry one, so you can stack an octave underneath a part rather than replacing it outright. FAV stores a single favourite setting and recalls it on demand, and a 3.5 mm jack on the rear panel lets a non-latching footswitch — a Boss FS5U or similar — call that preset up without bending down mid-song. The brushed silver chassis shares the 120 x 70 mm footprint of the rest of the CHUG pedals, running on 9V DC through a 5.33 mm centre-negative barrel and drawing 180 mA from a supply rated at 200 mA or better, with buffered bypass and a USB-C port alongside the power jack. The 3.5 mm to 1/4" cable is included; the footswitch is not.

What it does well, and where it has limits

Worth knowing before you buy: like every pitch shifter, the CHUG CAPO produces some audible digital artefacts on fast solo lines, though the character of the instrument underneath survives intact. On bass, tracking can struggle in the lowest register depending on the instrument and how far down it is tuned. For rhythm work, key changes and drop tunings on guitar — the jobs it was built for — it moves fast and stays out of your way.
