Yamaha CP88 88-Key Stage Piano is built for the pianist who plays real gigs and wants a keyboard that answers back like a grand. The Natural Wood Graded Hammer action with triple sensors is the reason to spend the money. Every control sits on the front panel, one knob per job, so nothing lives in a menu.
The 88 keys are natural wood, weighted heavier in the bass and lighter up top, with three sensors under each so fast repeated notes register cleanly. Synthetic ebony and ivory key tops give your fingers some grip through a long set. It is a balanced action built for accurate touch response rather than a lightweight synth feel.
The CP88 holds 320 Live Set Sounds with 128 of them preset, each a complete combination of piano, electric piano and sub sections. Polyphony is 128 notes. Seamless Sound Switching keeps the tail of the last chord ringing when you change sounds mid-song, so there is no gap between a piano intro and an electric piano verse.
The piano section has damper resonance plus a choice of compressor, distortion, drive or chorus. The electric piano section runs three effect blocks: drive, then auto pan, tremolo, ring modulator, touch wah, pedal wah or compressor, then two choruses, a flanger and three phasers. The sub section gets chorus/flanger, rotary speaker, tremolo or distortion. A 3-band master EQ with a sweepable mid sits over everything.
Two foot controller jacks and two foot switch jacks (sustain and assignable) cover expression and pedalling. MIDI in and out, USB to host and USB to device are on the back, and the USB connection doubles as a MIDI and audio interface for recording. A stereo aux input on 6.3 mm jacks lets you run a second keyboard or a phone through the CP88 outputs.
The package contents list an owner's manual, a power cord and the FC3A foot pedal, so sustain is sorted from day one. The unit is 524 mm deep, a straightforward fit on a standard stage stand.
