Yamaha DBR12 12-Inch Powered Loudspeaker

The Yamaha DBR12 12-Inch Powered Loudspeaker is the working musician's main: 1,000 watts of bi-amped power, a 131 dB maximum output and a two-channel mixer on the back, all in a black plastic cabinet that weighs 15.8 kilograms. It is for the band or DJ who wants one box per side, no outboard amp and a floor-monitor mode for when it doubles as a wedge. The thing worth paying for is the DSP, which keeps it sounding right at any volume without you touching an EQ.

1,000 watts bi-amped, 131 dB SPL

The amplifier is split, with 800 watts dynamic to the 12-inch low-frequency driver and 200 watts to the high-frequency driver, for 1,000 watts total and 465 watts continuous. Maximum output on axis at one metre is 131 dB SPL, which is enough to fill a pub or a hall without the amp clipping. The bass-reflex cabinet has a 90-degree nominal coverage pattern, so two boxes on stands cover a wide room.

FIR-X crossover and D-CONTOUR

The crossover at 2.1 kHz uses Yamaha's FIR-X tuning, a linear-phase FIR filter that keeps the two drivers time-aligned through the handover so vocals stay clear in the crossover region. D-CONTOUR multi-band dynamic processing has FOH/MAIN, MONITOR and OFF positions. Set it to MONITOR when the box is on its side at your feet and it pulls back the low end that would otherwise muddy the stage.

Two-channel mixer, mic to RCA

Input 1 is a combo XLR/quarter-inch jack and input 2 is a second combo plus a pair of unbalanced RCA sockets, so a mic, a keyboard and a phone or laptop all plug in without a separate mixer. The XLR output can be switched between a parallel through of channel 1 or a mix of both channels, which lets you daisy-chain a second DBR or send the mix on to a sub.

Pole, fly or lay it down as a wedge

A 35-millimetre pole socket in the base mounts it on a stand or over a sub, and three M8 by 15-millimetre flying points, two underneath and one at the rear, take standard eyebolts for install work. The angled cabinet lets it lie on the floor as a monitor. Yamaha's optional BBS251, BCS251, BWS251-300 and BWS251-400 brackets handle wall and ceiling mounting.

15.8 kilograms with two side handles

At 15.8 kilograms and 348 millimetres deep, the moulded plastic cabinet is a comfortable lift with the two side handles. A four-speed fan keeps the amplifier cool and stays quiet during acoustic sets. Power draw is 18 watts at idle and 74 watts at one-eighth power, and it runs on anything from 100 to 240 volts.
