Yamaha P-225 88-Key Digital Piano - Black is the portable piano for someone who practises at home in the week and gigs or rehearses on the weekend. It packs the CFX concert grand sample and 192-note polyphony into a body 318 mm deep, and it is on the floor at Guitar World Gold Coast now.
The GHC action gives the low keys more resistance than the high ones, so the weight your hands learn here transfers to an acoustic piano. Touch sensitivity has Hard, Medium, Soft and Fixed settings. Transpose covers six semitones either way and tuning runs from 414.8 to 466.8 Hz.
The piano voice is sampled from the Yamaha CFX, with VRM Lite modelling the resonance between strings and key-off samples catching the sound of a damper landing. Polyphony is 192 notes, there are 24 voices, and Intelligent Acoustic Control and the Stereophonic Optimizer keep the balance right at low volume and on headphones.
Twenty built-in rhythms give you a drummer to practise with, and the two-track recorder holds about 11,000 notes per song so you can lay down a left hand and play over it. Duo mode splits the keys into two equal ranges for lessons, and two Sound Boost settings push the piano forward in a band.
USB to host carries MIDI and audio at 44.1 kHz, 24-bit stereo, so it doubles as an interface for recording into a laptop. Bluetooth audio input streams tracks from a phone (availability varies by area), an aux out feeds a PA or amp, and the Smart Pianist app puts the settings on a screen. Two 7 W amplifiers handle a small room on their own.
A sustain pedal jack and a pedal unit socket are both fitted, so the optional LP-1 triple pedal and L-200 stand turn it into a furniture piano, and the SC-KB851 soft case covers the gig. It runs from a 12 V AC adaptor. With the music rest fitted the depth is 362 mm.
