Yamaha PSR-E383 61-Key Portable Keyboard is the starter keyboard that plays louder when you hit it harder, which matters more than any voice count when you are learning. It is the first touch-sensitive model in the PSR-E range, and at 317 mm deep it sits on a desk or a stand without taking over the room.

Touch-sensitive keys, 650 voices, 48-note polyphony

Touch response has Soft, Medium and Hard settings, plus Off for organ and synth parts. There are 650 voices with 48-note polyphony, a Piano button that jumps straight to the grand, and Dual mode for layering two voices. Effects include 7 chorus types, 5 master EQ settings, 26 harmony types and 152 arpeggio patterns.

260 styles, 125 songs and Keys to Success lessons

The 260 accompaniment styles follow your left hand with intro, main, auto fill and ending controls, and Auto Chord Play offers 50 chord progressions to jam over. The 125 preset songs work with the Keys to Success lesson mode, and Duo mode splits the keyboard so a teacher and student play the same octave side by side. Melody Suppressor thins the lead line out of a track from the aux input so you can play it yourself.

USB audio, aux in and 2.5 W plus 2.5 W speakers

USB to host carries MIDI and audio to a computer or the Rec'n'Share app, and a stereo mini aux input takes a phone. Two 12 cm speakers on 2.5 W a side are loud enough for the lounge room, and the whole thing draws 5 W from the PA-130 adaptor. There is a sustain pedal jack, a metronome, transpose of 12 semitones each way and auto power off.
