Yamaha SA2200 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar - Brown Sunburst

The YAMAHA SA2200 is Yamaha's flagship semi-hollow, made for players who want a set-neck archtop that stays composed at band volume. Laminated maple body, solid mahogany centre block, gold hardware and an ebony board, dressed in Brown Sunburst. What makes it worth the money is the pair of push/push coil taps: humbucker thickness or single-coil bite from either pickup, switched without taking your hand off the knobs.

Laminated maple body, solid mahogany centre block

The body is laminated maple with a solid mahogany block running through the centre, so the guitar keeps the air and bloom of a hollow instrument while the block holds feedback in check and lets notes hang. Neck construction is set-in, which puts neck and body in direct contact for sustain. A 2-ply black pickguard sits over the treble side.

Alnico V humbuckers with push/push coil taps

Yamaha winds the pickups in-house around Alnico V magnets, with a humbucker in the bridge and another at the neck. A 3-position toggle picks the pickup, and each one has its own volume and tone knob, so a rhythm level and a lead level can sit ready on the guitar. Push either knob down and that pickup drops to single coil, taking the SA2200 from thick and vocal to clean and sharp.

One-piece mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard

The neck is a single piece of mahogany with an ebony fingerboard and a 350mm (13-3/4 inch) radius, flat enough for bends without choking. Twenty-two medium jumbo frets give plenty of grip under the fingers, and the nut is bone. Width runs 43mm at the nut to 53.5mm at the 12th fret, with a depth of 20.5mm at the first fret and 22.2mm at the 12th, so the profile fills the hand without feeling like a club.

Gold Gotoh hardware

All the metalwork is gold-finished. A Gotoh GE101Z stop tailpiece anchors the strings, string spacing at the bridge is 10.4mm, and Gotoh SG30 tuning machines hold pitch through a night of vibrato and big bends.
