A MacBook Pro can run a substantial audio-production workflow using native software. The useful question is whether you need more processing for particular UAD plug-ins, an audio interface for recording, or both.
Native processing on the Mac
Native plug-ins, including UADx versions, run on your computer’s CPU. They do not require an Apollo or Satellite. Adding a Satellite does not accelerate the native versions: it runs compatible UAD-2 DSP plug-ins instead. Check which version and licence you own, because not every title is available in both formats.
UAD-2 Satellite: DSP for mixing
A Satellite supplies dedicated processing for compatible UAD-2 plug-ins in your DAW. It adds no microphone inputs, preamps or audio outputs, so you continue using your existing audio interface. This can be useful when your workflow depends on DSP versions of UAD effects.
Satellite DSP does not expand the processing available for Apollo input channels in UAD Console. That real-time signal path uses the Apollo’s own DSP.
Apollo: audio I/O and a recording workflow
Apollo interfaces combine audio inputs and outputs with onboard UAD processing. UAD Console lets you monitor and record through compatible DSP plug-ins. Input counts, preamps, Unison facilities and DSP capacity vary by model; choose the exact interface for the sources you need to record.
Performance and compatibility
There is no universal plug-in-count benchmark for a Mac, Satellite or Apollo. Capacity depends on the plug-ins, sample rate, processing hardware and session settings. DSP does not make the rest of the DAW or its native instruments independent of the Mac.
Before buying or upgrading macOS, check the exact hardware generation, connection, supported operating system, DAW and plug-in licences against Universal Audio’s current requirements. Older Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 3, USB and FireWire products must not be treated as interchangeable.
