Paul Reed Smith SE Special Semi-Hollow — Orange Tiger Smoke Burst
The PRS SE Special Semi-Hollow is the most tonally versatile guitar in the SE catalogue — a single-f-hole semi-hollow with a hum/"single"/hum pickup layout, two coil-tap mini-toggles and a 5-way blade switch that combine to deliver twelve distinct pickup configurations from one instrument. PRS's patented tremolo, a Wide Thin maple neck and stunning Orange Tiger Smoke Burst figured-maple top make it equally at home for jazz comping, blues licks, indie cleans, classic rock crunch and modern fusion. One guitar, half a dozen styles.
HSH + Dual Coil Taps = 12 Pickup Configurations
This is where the SE Special earns its name. PRS 58/15 LT "S" humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions are joined by a PRS Narrowfield DD "S" in the middle — a hum-cancelling pickup with the chime and clarity of a single-coil but none of the buzz. A 5-way blade switch lets you select all the standard combinations, while two mini-toggle coil-tap switches let you split each humbucker independently. Run the maths: that's 12 unique pickup voicings on tap, from full-fat humbucker chunk through Strat-style quack to thin, glassy single-coil cleans.
PRS Narrowfield DD "S" — The Secret Weapon
The Narrowfield is one of PRS's cleverest pickup designs. Narrower than a standard humbucker so it sits cleanly in the middle position like a single-coil, but with PRS's hum-cancelling DD construction. The result: a vintage-style chime in positions 2 and 4 that complements the humbuckers without the 60-cycle hum that single-coils suffer from. Quack alive, hum dead.
Semi-Hollow Construction with Single F-Hole
A figured maple top with PRS's Shallow Violin top carve sits over a chambered mahogany back, creating semi-hollow resonance with the focused attack of a solid body. The single f-hole isn't just visual flair — it's voiced for added air and harmonic complexity, giving the SE Special a slightly more open, breathing tonal character than a fully solid PRS. The Orange Tiger Smoke Burst finish shows off the figured maple grain in spectacular fashion.
PRS Patented Tremolo
PRS's patented tremolo is one of the smoothest, most tuning-stable trem systems on the market — a refined design delivering subtle vibrato through full dive-bombs without sending your tuning south. Combined with locking-style PRS-designed tuners (with wing buttons for fast tuning), this is a guitar built for the road as well as the studio.
Wide Thin Maple Neck, Rosewood Board & PRS Birds
A multi-ply maple set neck with PRS's Wide Thin profile is built for speed — slim front-to-back for fast lead playing without feeling skinny in the hand.
