About this product

Overview & specifications

The Taylor GS Mini-e Rosewood SB is the little Taylor that stopped being a travel guitar and became everyone's main guitar. Pick it up and the first thing you notice is that it doesn't sound small — a solid torrefied Sitka spruce top over layered Indian rosewood pushes out a low end that has no business coming from a body this size. The second thing you notice is that you've been playing it for forty minutes and you meant to be doing something else. Wrapped in a soft matte sunburst with a firestripe pickguard and cream binding, this one is dressed for the room as well as the road.

A torrefied top that arrives already broken in

Taylor roasts the solid Sitka spruce top before it ever reaches the bracing bench. Torrefaction drives moisture and unstable resins out of the timber, leaving a stiffer, lighter, more responsive soundboard — the physical change a good acoustic normally takes years of playing to develop. In practice that means a top which responds immediately to a light touch, holds together when you dig in, and won't spend its first two years tightening up on you. Look closely at the grain under the matte finish and you can see the fine cross-silking that marks a properly quartersawn top.

Layered Indian rosewood, and why that is the right call here

The back and sides are layered Indian rosewood — three plies rather than a single solid sheet, and deliberately so. A layered body shrugs off the humidity swings that come with throwing a guitar in the car, taking it camping, or moving it between an air-conditioned house and a Queensland summer. It also lets Taylor build the sides thinner and stiffer, which reflects more energy back into the top instead of soaking it up. The result is the deep, woody warmth rosewood is known for, in an instrument you can genuinely treat as a knockabout.

Short scale, full-size feel

The GS Mini shape is a scaled-down version of Taylor's Grand Symphony body, and the 23-1/2" scale length takes real tension out of the strings. Chords in the first position take less effort, bends come easier, and players with smaller hands stop fighting the instrument. What Taylor didn't scale down is the neck: the neo-tropical mahogany neck carries the standard carve profile from the full-size range and a 1-11/16" nut width, so your fretting hand isn't cramped the way it is on a true travel guitar. A West African Crelicam ebony fingerboard runs to 20 frets with simple dot markers, and the whole neck wears the same matte finish as the body — no sticky palm on a warm night.

ES-B electronics, and an onboard tuner you'll actually use

Taylor's ES-B system sits discreetly in the upper bout with volume and tone sliders set flush into the side, so there's nothing to catch on a strap or a bag. Plugged in, it does the job the best acoustic systems do — it sounds like the guitar in the room rather than a piezo impression of one. The built-in digital tuner is the detail that earns its place on a gig: it's right there under your left hand between songs, no pedal, no phone, no cable-swapping. For anyone playing open mics, church, or a corner of a pub, this is a genuinely stage-ready instrument straight out of the bag.

The details that lift it above a standard GS Mini

The SB takes its cues from the appointments Taylor developed for its 50th Anniversary instruments. The matte sunburst top fades from a warm amber centre to a deep chocolate edge, framed by cream binding and a fine black-and-white purfling line. A three-ring rosette circles the soundhole, the bridge is Crelicam ebony with black pins, and the tuners are die-cast chrome with chrome buttons. The firestripe pickguard is the piece that ties it together — an unapologetically old-school touch on a thoroughly modern guitar. Taylor includes a structured gig bag, so it's protected from the day it leaves the shop.

Who this guitar is for

If you want one acoustic that lives on the couch, goes to rehearsal, handles a small gig and survives a road trip, this is it. It suits the fingerstyle player who wants a responsive top, the singer-songwriter who wants something that records well without fuss, and the experienced player who is tired of leaving an expensive dreadnought at home. It's also an outstanding second guitar — the one that ends up getting played the most, because it's the one that's always within reach.
