Yamaha HS5 5-Inch Powered Studio Monitor (each)is the compact HS: a 5-inch woofer, a 1-inch tweeter and 70 W of bi-amplified power in a black MDF cabinet that fits a small desk and a small room. Priced and sold as a single speaker, so order two for a pair.
The 5-inch woofer runs from a 45 W amplifier and the 1-inch tweeter from a 25 W amplifier, with the crossover at 2 kHz. Rated response is 74 Hz to 24 kHz at -3 dB, which is honest for a 5-inch box, and the bass-reflex cabinet gets the most out of the driver without faking the bottom end.
ROOM CONTROL cuts 0, 2 or 4 dB below 500 Hz for when the speaker has to sit close to a wall or on a desk that resonates. HIGH TRIM adds or removes 2 dB at the top, and the LEVEL control has a +4 dB centre click so a pair matches easily.
A balanced XLR and a balanced TRS input cover interfaces, desks and monitor controllers, with -10 dBu sensitivity at 10 kOhm. The cabinet is 222 mm deep, weighs 5.3 kg and draws 45 W, and a power cord ships in the box.
