If not for the Beatles, who knows if you would ever have heard of Vox? In the late 50’s, a guitarist named Dick Denny was working for England’s JMI Corporation as an amplifier designer. They came up with something they called the AC1/15, an amp that could offer the volume and sustain that artists were looking for at the time. It was a great product and caught on well in London. But by 1960, rock’n’roll was taking over the world, and Dick and his crew were charged with creating an even more powerful amp. They decided to double the power of their original amp (whose name had been shortened to AC15), to make the cabinet bigger and to add an additional speaker. This, they named the AC30/4 Twin. It probably would have done pretty well in any case.
But in 1962, a little group called The Beatles cut a song called “Love Me Do,” and created a guitar tone that millions would love and try to recreate. Vox became the most in-demand amplifier in the world, and many of those same classic amps are still the equipment of choice for musicians of today.
VOX has not always been at the top of the market, however. After its initial smashing success, the company changed hands and by the 1970s was being outdone by its competitors. However, the company has been owned by Korg since 1992, and once Korg decided to revive the tube rectifier and alnico speakers to recreate a version of the beloved AC30, the tide began to turn back in VOX’s favor, and the company is once again setting the standard for amplifiers.
