The Yamaha THR5A is the acoustic version of Yamaha's desktop amp, built for players with a pickup-equipped steel-string or nylon guitar who want it to sound like a miked-up recording at home volume. Instead of amp models it offers microphone simulations, plus the compressor and reverb that make an acoustic sit right. Stereo speakers, a tuner and battery power round it out.
The MIC TYPE selector chooses between CONDENSER, DYNAMIC and TUBE microphone simulations, a NYLON setting voiced for classical guitars, and EG CLN, a clean electric voicing if you plug in an electric. These are built with Yamaha's Virtual Circuitry Modelling. The BLEND/GAIN knob sets how much of the simulation is mixed with your pickup's own signal, and MASTER and TONE controls take care of overall level and shape. Ten watts run as 5 watts a side into two 8cm full-range speakers.
The EFFECT knob carries compressor, compressor/chorus and chorus, with flanger, phaser and tremolo added through the THR Editor. DLY/REV covers delay, delay/reverb and hall reverb, with spring reverb and a noise gate also in the editor. A chromatic tuner is built in and the TAP switch sets delay time. The stereo PHONES output keeps rehearsals quiet, and a stereo mini AUX IN lets you play along with a phone.
A USB connection records straight into the included Cubase AI, and the USB cable comes in the box along with the AC adapter, a stereo mini cable and the owner's manual. On AA alkaline batteries you get about six hours, or about seven on nickel-hydride. The cabinet is 360mm wide, 167mm high and 120mm deep, and weighs 2.8kg, so it goes in a backpack with the guitar.
