The Yamaha DTX452K Plus Electronic Drum Kit is the step up for a drummer who has outgrown the entry-level feel and wants a kick pad, a real hi-hat pedal and a snare that knows where it was hit. It is a black electronic kit with 415 stereo voices in the module, ten training functions and a rack that sets up left-handed as easily as right. It arrives with the rack pre-assembled, so you are playing sooner than you expect.
Where the base DTX402 uses a beater-less pedal, the DTX452K gives you a kick trigger pad with a single bass drum pedal, so your right foot learns on the same motion as an acoustic kit. The HH65 hi-hat pedal controls open, closed and foot-splash sounds, and the three-zone snare pad separates head, rim and cross-stick strokes. Those three upgrades are what make the move from practice kit to a kit you can gig on.
The crash cymbal pad can be choked: grab it after the hit and the sound stops, the way it does on a bronze cymbal. It is a small thing that makes stabs and endings feel right instead of ringing on. Together with the three-zone snare, it gives the DTX452K more expression than its price suggests.
The module carries 415 stereo voices, split as 287 drum and percussion sounds and 128 keyboard voices, on a screen that is quick to navigate. Ten built-in training functions test your timing and consistency and score the result, which is the honest feedback most self-taught drummers never get.
The redesigned rack stands on four legs, so it does not walk across the floor mid-song, and the whole layout can be mirrored for a left-handed player without extra parts. It ships pre-assembled, which cuts the usual evening of hex keys down to attaching pads and plugging in.
The free DTX402 Touch app runs on iOS and Android and lets you edit every kit from a phone or tablet instead of scrolling through the module. Yamaha's Rec'n'Share app records your playing along with your own music library, then trims and shares the clip. Between the two you get a practice tool and a way to hear yourself improving.
