The Yamaha PX5 Power Amplifier is a two-channel Class-D amp for the engineer who wants the speaker processing built into the rack rather than bolted on as a separate box. It delivers 500 watts a side into 8 ohms and 800 watts a side into 4 ohms, with crossover, EQ, delay and limiting handled on board. In a plain black two-unit chassis weighing 6.9 kilograms, it is the piece that turns a pair of passive cabinets into a tuned system.
Each channel puts out 500 watts into 8 ohms or 800 watts into 4 ohms. Bridge the pair in Power Boost mode and you get a single channel of 800 watts into 8 ohms or 1,400 watts into 4 ohms for driving a sub. The output stage is Class D with a balanced BTL circuit, frequency response is flat within 1 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and the signal-to-noise ratio is 100 dB A-weighted.
Yamaha's D-CONTOUR multi-band dynamic processing sits on the inputs with FOH/MAIN, MONITOR and OFF settings, shaping the low end differently depending on whether the cabinet is out front or on the floor as a wedge. Behind it is a proper speaker processor with a 6-band parametric EQ, a limiter and delay, plus high-pass and low-pass filters adjustable from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with polarity control. Delay runs from 0 to 74 milliseconds and total latency from analogue input to speaker is 1.5 milliseconds.
Factory presets are loaded for Yamaha's passive speakers, so a CBR, Club or VXS/VXC box gets the right crossover, EQ and limiting without you measuring anything. There are eight user preset slots on top of that for your own rigs. The over-voltage limiter can be configured by wattage or by speaker preset, which keeps a cheaper cabinet safe when it is hanging off an amp this size.
Outputs are two Neutrik speakON NL4 sockets, two pairs of binding posts and two quarter-inch TS jacks, so it wires into anything from a touring loom to a bar install. Input impedance is 20 kilohms balanced or 10 kilohms unbalanced, maximum input is +24 dBu, and gain can be set to 32 dB, 26 dB, +4 dBu or +14 dBu sensitivity to match whatever mixer or DSP is feeding it.
Thermal, over-voltage and over-current faults shut the power supply down, while a DC fault holds it off until you intervene, so a failed driver does not take the amp with it. Two 16-step variable-speed fans push air front to rear and stay quiet at low load. Front-panel LEDs show power, alert, USB, protect, clip/limit and signal per channel, with an auto LED-off feature for dark stages. Power draw is 55 watts idling and 230 watts at one-eighth power, and a 2-metre AC cable and USB cover come in the box.
