The Yamaha PX8 Power Amplifier is the bigger PX for the hire company, the band with a 15-inch main and sub rig, or the venue that needs headroom to spare. It runs 800 watts a side into 8 ohms and 1,050 watts a side into 4 ohms, with the same on-board speaker processing as the rest of the series. The black two-unit chassis weighs 7.2 kilograms, so the extra power costs you almost nothing in the rack.
Each channel delivers 800 watts into 8 ohms, 1,050 watts into 4 ohms and 600 watts into 2 ohms, so it will drive two 8-ohm cabinets per side without complaint. The Class-D output is a balanced BTL circuit, total harmonic distortion is 0.1 percent at 10 watts, and frequency response holds within 1 dB across 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Signal-to-noise is 101 dB A-weighted, which keeps the hiss out of quiet passages.
D-CONTOUR multi-band dynamic processing on the inputs can be set to FOH/MAIN, MONITOR or OFF, so the same amp behaves correctly whether it is feeding mains or wedges. The speaker processor section adds a 6-band parametric EQ, a limiter and up to 74 milliseconds of delay, with high-pass and low-pass filters sweeping 20 Hz to 20 kHz and polarity control for lining up a sub. Analogue input to speaker output takes 1.5 milliseconds.
Yamaha ships factory presets for its own passive cabinets, covering the CBR, Club and VXS/VXC series, which means a matched system is a menu choice rather than a measurement session. Eight user presets store your own crossover and limiter settings for different rigs. The over-voltage limiter is user-configurable by wattage or by speaker preset, so a smaller cabinet on the monitor send stays within its limits.
Output connectors are two Neutrik speakON NL4 sockets, two pairs of binding posts and two quarter-inch TS jacks. Inputs accept up to +24 dBu at 20 kilohms balanced or 10 kilohms unbalanced, and gain is selectable between 32 dB, 26 dB, +4 dBu and +14 dBu to suit the console or processor upstream. An input summing function lets you feed one signal to both channels without a Y-cable.
Thermal trouble triggers an output limiter first and only shuts the supply down if it persists, while over-voltage and over-current faults cut power immediately and a DC fault stays latched until you clear it. Two 16-step variable-speed fans move air front to rear. Per-channel protect, clip/limit and signal LEDs sit beside the power, alert and USB indicators, and an auto LED-off setting keeps the rack dark on stage. Power consumption is 60 watts idling and 280 watts at one-eighth power. A 2-metre AC cable and USB cover are included.
