Yamaha YCL-450 Intermediate Clarinet is the Bb clarinet for the student who has done their time on a plastic instrument and is ready for grenadilla wood. The dark grenadilla body with silver-plated keys looks the part, and leather pads borrowed from Yamaha's professional line make it seal and speak the way a step-up horn should.
The body is responsibly sourced grenadilla, the timber used on professional clarinets, in the standard Boehm system so no fingerings change from a student model. Silver-plated keys give a smooth feel under the fingers and stay looking good with a polishing cloth now and then.
Leather pads, taken from Yamaha's professional and custom clarinets, seal the holes more consistently than the usual student pads. The player gets a wider dynamic range, more power at forte, more control at pianissimo and a quieter mechanism, and the pads last longer as well.
The 65mm barrel is the standard length for pulling to pitch in a warm Australian rehearsal room. The holes are straight with a tapered undercut, and Yamaha reworked the bell and bore taper to keep the low register clear and the tuning even from the chalumeau up to the clarion.
The thumb-rest adjusts to the player's hand and carries a strap ring, so a neck strap can take the weight during long sessions. It comes with Yamaha's 4C mouthpiece, the student standard a teacher can work with from the first lesson.
