The Yamaha MG10XUF 10-Channel Analogue Mixer with Effects, USB and Faders is the small-format desk for the band running its own front of house, the church with a four-mic Sunday and the home studio that wants a real mixer in front of the interface. It gives you four D-PRE mic preamps, three stereo line inputs, SPX effects and a 24-bit/192 kHz USB interface in a metal chassis. Choosing the F model means faders where the XU has rotary knobs, and once you have mixed a live set on faders you will not go back.
Four mono channels carry Yamaha's D-PRE microphone preamps with +48 volt phantom power for condensers, and a hum and noise figure of -128 dBu on the mic input means the gain can go up without the hiss following. Three stereo line channels take keyboards, playback and a second interface, and the stereo bus feeds a pair of balanced XLR outputs, a monitor output, a headphone output and one aux send.
Two of the mono channels have Yamaha's 1-knob compressor, which sweeps threshold from +22 dBu down to -8 dBu and ratio from 1:1 up to 4:1 with a single turn, with attack around 25 milliseconds and release around 300 milliseconds. Turn it up on a vocal and the level evens out without you thinking about it. Each channel's three-band EQ offers 15 dB of cut or boost at a 10 kHz high shelf, a 2.5 kHz mid peak and a 100 Hz low shelf.
The on-board SPX processor holds 24 effect programs with a single parameter control to tune each one, and returns to the mix on its own FX bus. An optional FC5 foot switch turns the effect return on and off, so a singer can kill the reverb between songs from the stage. The effect send is the mixer's one aux, which keeps the signal path simple.
The two-in, two-out USB audio interface runs up to 24-bit/192 kHz, so the stereo mix goes to a laptop for recording or streaming and a playback track comes back into the desk. Steinberg's Cubase AI is included as a download, along with a Cubasis LE licence for iOS, which means the software side is covered on day one.
Long-throw faders replace the rotary level controls of the standard MG10XU, and a peak LED on each channel lights when the post-EQ signal is 3 dB from clipping. The stereo bus has a pair of seven-segment LED meters reading from -20 dB to peak. The impact-resistant metal chassis measures 244 millimetres wide by 390 millimetres deep and weighs 3.3 kilograms, and it runs from the supplied PA-10 AC adaptor drawing 22.9 watts.
