Yamaha MG12XU 12-Channel Analogue Mixer with Effects and USB is the 12-channel analogue desk for a duo or small band, a rehearsal room or a hall that wants six mic preamps, onboard reverb and a USB interface in a unit that fits on a table. Rotary level knobs instead of faders keep the footprint small, and the 24-bit, 192 kHz USB path means the same desk mixes the gig and records it.
Four mono channels take a mic or a line source, two more switch between a mic and a stereo pair, and two stereo line inputs handle keyboards or playback. Each D-PRE preamp offers +48 V phantom power and a 26 dB pad, with equivalent input noise of -128 dBu at full gain. A peak LED warns when the post-EQ signal is 3 dB from clipping.
Each channel has 15 dB of boost or cut on a 10 kHz high shelf, a 2.5 kHz peaking mid and a 100 Hz low shelf. Four channels add a compressor on a single knob that moves the threshold from +22 dBu to -8 dBu and the ratio from 1:1 to 4:1 as you turn it, with about 25 ms attack and 300 ms release. Put those four on the vocals and the bass and the mix holds together.
The SPX processor carries 24 effect programs with a single parameter knob to adjust the one that matters, such as decay on a reverb or time on a delay. A foot switch jack toggles the effect return, so an optional FC5 lets the singer cut the reverb for talking between songs.
The USB interface runs two channels in and two out at up to 24-bit, 192 kHz, sending the stereo mix to a computer and returning playback to the desk. Download details for Steinberg Cubase AI are in the box, along with a licence for the Cubasis LE iOS app.
Two aux sends, one of them feeding the effects, and two group buses give you a monitor mix and a way to sub-mix drums or vocals before the stereo bus. There is a monitor output and a headphone output, two 12-segment LED meters reading from -30 dB to peak, and channel crosstalk rated at -78 dB.
The metal chassis is 444 mm wide, 422 mm deep and weighs 4.2 kg, and it runs on 100 to 240 V at 22 W. The RK-MG12 rack-mount kit is an optional extra if you would rather rack it than table it.
