Yamaha MG16XU 16-Channel Analogue Mixer with Effects and USB

Yamaha MG16XU 16-Channel Analogue Mixer with Effects and USB is the 16-channel analogue desk for a covers band, a small venue or a school hall that wants ten mic preamps, onboard effects and a USB recording interface in one rack-mountable unit. Eight one-knob compressors and a sweepable mid EQ handle a full band, and the SPX reverb means one less box in the rack.

Ten D-PRE preamps, twelve input channels

Eight mono channels take a mic or line source, two more switch between a mic and a stereo pair, and two stereo line inputs round out the twelve. Each D-PRE preamp offers +48 V phantom power and a 26 dB pad for hot sources, with equivalent input noise of -128 dBu at full gain. A peak LED fires when the post-EQ signal sits 3 dB below clipping.

Three-band EQ with a sweepable mid

Every band gives 15 dB of boost or cut. The high shelf sits at 10 kHz and the low shelf at 100 Hz, while the mono-channel mid is a peaking band you sweep from 250 Hz to 5 kHz to find the exact frequency that is muddying a rhythm guitar or ringing in a wedge. Stereo channels get a fixed 2.5 kHz mid.

Eight one-knob compressors

Eight channels have a compressor on a single knob that sets gain, threshold and ratio together. The threshold moves from +22 dBu down to -8 dBu as the ratio rises from 1:1 to 4:1, with attack around 25 ms and release around 300 ms. It keeps a vocal or a bass sitting where you put it without stopping the show to adjust.

SPX effects and 24-bit, 192 kHz USB

The SPX processor delivers reverb and delay from the desk, fed from one of the four aux sends and returned to the mix, with an optional FC5 foot switch to mute the effect return between songs. USB carries two channels in and two out at up to 24-bit, 192 kHz, and the box includes download details for Steinberg Cubase AI plus a Cubasis LE iOS app licence.

Four aux sends, four groups, twin meters

Four aux sends, one feeding the effects, leave three for monitor mixes or outboard. Four group buses gather drums or backing vocals onto single faders ahead of the stereo bus, alongside a monitor output and a headphone output. Two 12-segment LED meters read from -30 dB to peak, channel crosstalk is rated at -78 dB, and distortion is 0.03% at +14 dBu across 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Metal chassis with the rack kit included

The metal chassis is 444 mm wide, 500 mm deep and weighs 6.8 kg, and the rack-mount kit ships in the box. It runs on 100 to 240 V mains and draws 30 W.
