Yamaha MG20 20-Channel Analogue Mixer is the 20-channel analogue desk for anyone who wants sixteen proper mic preamps and eight compressors without paying for effects or a USB interface they already own. Your outboard reverb plugs into the aux sends and your recording interface hangs off the outputs, and the rest of the desk matches the effects-equipped MG20XU. It is the sensible buy for a rehearsal room, a club install or a band with a rack already full of gear.
Twelve mono channels accept a mic or a line source, and four more channels switch between a mic and a stereo line pair. Each mic-capable channel has a D-PRE preamp with +48 V phantom power, and a PAD switch knocks down a hot signal before the gain knob. A peak LED on the mono channels lights when the post-EQ signal is 3 dB below clipping.
All three bands offer 15 dB of boost or cut. The high band shelves at 10 kHz, the low band at 100 Hz, and the mono-channel mid is a peaking band you sweep from 250 Hz to 5 kHz to hunt down the exact frequency that is muddying a guitar or ringing in a vocal mic. Stereo channels carry a fixed 2.5 kHz mid.
Eight channels get a compressor on a single knob that sets gain, threshold and ratio at once. The threshold runs from +22 dBu down to -8 dBu, the ratio from 1:1 to 4:1, with roughly 25 ms attack and 300 ms release. Dial it in on the lead vocal and the bass and both stay put in the mix when the player gets excited.
Four aux sends give you four monitor mixes or a split between wedges and outboard effects. Four group buses collect drums or backing vocals onto single faders ahead of the stereo bus, with a separate monitor output and a headphone output on top. Two 12-segment LED meters read from -30 dB to peak, and channel crosstalk is rated at -78 dB.
The metal chassis weighs 6.9 kg and measures 500 mm deep, and the rack-mount kit ships in the box. Power is 100 to 240 V at 36 W, so it works anywhere with a mains plug.
