The Yamaha TRBX174 is the bass we point most first-time players at, and plenty of gigging players keep one as a backup. It has a mahogany body, a bolt-on maple neck at full 34-inch scale, and a split-coil and single-coil pickup pair that covers rock, funk and pop, all in a Dark Blue Metallic finish. What you get for the money is a bass that plays like something dearer.
The body is mahogany, and the bolt-on maple neck runs a 34-inch (863.6mm) scale, the standard length that gives a four-string proper low-end definition. The rosewood fingerboard has a 250mm (10 inch) radius and 24 medium frets, so there is a full two octaves on every string. Nut width is 40mm on a urea nut, widening to 56.4mm at the 12th fret, with a neck depth of 21mm at the first fret.
A ceramic double-coil pickup sits in the neck position and a ceramic single coil at the bridge. Each has its own volume, with a master tone knob, so you can favour the neck pickup for a round, fat sound or blend in the bridge for more growl. Die-cast hardware and covered tuners keep it in tune, and it comes strung with a D'Addario EXL170 set, 0.045 to 0.100.
