Yamaha YDS-150 Digital Saxophone is for the sax player who wants to practise at ten at night in a unit, the beginner who cannot yet get a note out of a brass horn, and anyone who wants real saxophone fingering with the sound turned down. A genuine brass bell on a digital body is what makes it feel like a saxophone rather than a controller.
Yamaha put speaker units, enclosures and an acoustic pipe inside the body, feeding a real brass bell. Your breath through the mouthpiece drives the sound generation, the speakers push it through the pipe and bell, and the whole instrument vibrates in your hands the way an acoustic sax does.
The keys sit where they do on an acoustic saxophone, so fingerings learnt here transfer straight to a YAS or YTS and back again. The mouthpiece is the same 4C fitted to Yamaha's student saxophones, which means the embouchure you build on it is the real one.
A micro USB Type-B port carries MIDI to a computer or tablet, and the aux output feeds a mixer or amp when it is time to be heard. Yamaha's app for Android and iOS handles the deeper settings, so the horn itself stays uncluttered.
At 103mm deep it stands in a corner or slips into a bag, and the auto power-off function means it switches itself off if you walk away mid-practice. It is the practice tool for a player who needs to keep the fingers moving without the sound of a tenor filling the house.
