The Yamaha YTR-4335GII Intermediate Trumpet is the second generation of a horn that has carried thousands of players from school band into serious ensemble work. The headline is the gold brass bell, which gives a broader, warmer sound than the yellow brass on Yamaha's student models, all in a gold lacquer finish.
Gold brass has a higher copper content than yellow brass, and on a trumpet that reads as a darker, fuller sound with more body in the low and middle registers. The two-piece bell has a 123mm flare and was made lighter for this generation, which loosens up the response and lets the player shade the colour of a note more easily.
The valve caps and finger buttons were redesigned for this model. They sit better under the hand and add a touch of mass to the valve block, which helps the horn project. Inside, Monel alloy pistons keep the action quick and even and resist the corrosion that slows lesser valves.
The bore is a medium-large 11.65mm, the size most working players settle on for a balance of resistance and volume. Yamaha changed the way the slides are soldered on this generation to hold their alignment more accurately, which shows up as better intonation across the range. The horn is medium weight, enough to feel serious without wearing out a player through a long rehearsal.
